Allowing a series of petitions seeking permission for conducting cultural and sporting events at temple festivals, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has said such events must be held without discrimination.

Justice T. Krishnavalli ordered that there should not e any flex board in support of any political party, communal leader or community at the venue. Prizes should not be distributed in the name of any political party or in the name of any member associated with any political party, the court said.

It said the events should not affect either religious or communal harmony and must be conducted without discrimination based on caste.

There should be no obscenity or vulgarity in the performances by any of the participants, the court said.

The organisers were directed to give a written undertaking to the authorities concerned that they would adhere to the conditions imposed for the conduct of the event.

If there was any violation of the conditions, the police officer concerned was at liberty to take action as per the law.

The police have been allowed to impose any restrictions or conditions, purely in the interest of preserving public order and tranquillity.
