At a meeting called to pledge support for the 11-year-old girl who was reportedly raped by several service staff in an Ayanavaram gated community, her sister recounted how the revelation unfolded at first.

“My sister opened up to me about the incident few weeks ago, while I was going with her on the lift. This guy Ravi touched her arm and she didn’t say anything to him. When I asked her why he did that to her, and why she did not react, she opened up about all the abuse she’s been going through for months,” she said.

“She’s just a 11-year-old hoping to feel safe, but she was being raped in her own apartment by 20 men for seven months. She was threatened with pocket knives and gagged with belts around her eyes, ears, neck, they even threatened to kill our mother if she spoke about it to anyone. This news totally shattered us and made us question the existence of humanity.

“It’s important to educate our kids about sex, to speak out. But right now I want justice for my sister. These men must be hanged,” she said

Transgender activist Apsara Reddy, along with members from the Tamil film fraternity who organised a protest meeting, took up this cry too.

After completion of a five-day police interrogation, the 17 suspects in the case were produced before before the Mahila Court Judge.

The Judge Manjula ordered them to be kept under judicial custody until August 10.
