MLA and founder of the Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi M. Thamimun Ansari slammed the Tamil Nadu government over the arrests of Muslim youth by the National Investigating Agency (NIA), stating that innocent Muslim youth were picked up by the agency.

During the debate on the demand for grant of the Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes and Minorities Department, Mr. Ansari said the NIA had been picking up innocent Muslim youth, releasing their details to the media and released them the next day after finding that they were innocent. “They are targeting one community. There is no second opinion that terrorism and extremism should not be allowed, but this continued targeting of one community is not acceptable. I want to remind the government that their leader and former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had issued statements condemning the NIA,” Mr. Ansari said.

‘Spreading falsehood’

He said when Muslim youth working abroad were collecting funds to build Madrasas and mosques, the NIA had been spreading falsehood that they were collecting funds for terrorism. The Chief Minister should take note of this and take this issue to the authorities concerned to not allow this selective targeting of one community.

Mr. Ansari sought a ban on TikTok.

Information Technology Minister Dr. M. Manikandan, explaining the background, including the earlier ban, said the government was keen on banning the app.
