The Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association has appealed for the intervention of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and “a detailed inquiry into and fixing of responsibility for a serious lapse” by the Directorate of Medical Education which has not yet filled vacancies at the newly started Sivaganga Medical College.
According to the association’s State president K. Senthil, the State showed staff from other colleges as being part of the new college after the Medical Council of India found several deficiencies during its first inspection. A release from the association stated that had the government staff, including doctors, not helped the Directorate of Medical Education, the MCI may not have sanctioned permission to start the college.
Dr. Senthil said currently there were only 20 doctors in the college and the 300-bed attached hospital, while there were 250 vacancies of medical and paramedical staff to be filled.
The Chief Minister had sanctioned the posts even before the first inspection on April 27 and 28.
Dr. Senthil said the surprise inspection taken up by the MCI on June 18 was also conducted with the help of doctors sent on deputation.
Classes likely to commence on August 1
