Gone are the days when the Government colleges wore a deserted look at the time of admissions.

A large number of boys and girls and their parents are thronging the Government Arts College (coeducation) in the heart of Salem city, for collecting the application forms for admission into the undergraduate courses for the last about ten days.

The Government Arts College (coeducation), an autonomous institution, offered a total of 1,434 seats in 19 undergraduate courses.

The distribution of application forms commenced on May 4, even though the Plus-Two results were published only on May 7.

Since then, a large number candidates have been visiting this colleges braving the inclement weather, to collect the application forms and long queues of boys and girls were witnessed every day.

Already 8,000 application forms have been sold out from the college. On May 11 alone, as many as 1,800 application forms were collected.

The introduction of new subjects, shift system, and above all commencement of admission process and the classes much in advance compared to previous years are said to be the reasons for the college attracting a large number of students.

According to Dhanalakshmi, principal of the college, the distribution of applications will be stopped at 4pm on May 18. The candidates should submit the forms before 5pm on that day, the principal said.

The demand for the applications has been so heavy, that the college authorities decided to distribute the application forms on Saturday (May 16) too.

There has been a good demand for commerce and mathematics courses this year too.

The application forms of basic science subjects too are in good demand, the sources added.

A Single Window System will be followed for the admission.

The counselling marking the commencement of admission process will begin on May 25. Counselling procedure will be continued till June 3 here.

The scene is not different in yet another government college in the city — the Government Arts College for Women on the Yercaud road at Hasthampatti.

The sale of applications has been brisk in this college too.

Both these colleges are expected to reopen by the first week of June, sources said.
