Good response to Earth Day contests

The inter-school and inter-collegiate competitions on the topic ‘Clean Earth: Green Earth’ held as part of the Earth Day celebrations at Periyar University here on Friday evoked good response.

More than 350 students from 42 schools and colleges, a majority of them from government educational institutions, across the district participated in the elocution, essay writing and drawing competitions held in different groups.

The event organised by the Department of Environmental Sciences and Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the Periyar University was sponsored by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, New Delhi.

The competitions were held in two groups: Group A: students of classes VI – X; and Group B: students of classes XI and XII and students of under-graduate courses in colleges.

The preliminary rounds were held on June 23, when 68 students from different schools and colleges were selected for the finals held on Friday.

The competition focused on the current environmental issues such as global warming, afforestation, soil conservation and renewable energy resources.  C. Swaminathan, Vice-Chancellor, Periyar University, gave away prizes to the winners of the competitions at the valediction.

The winners in each group got a cash award of Rs. 5,000. The second place winners were given Rs. 4,000 each and the third place winners Rs. 3,000 each.

The prize winning presentations and drawings will be forwarded to the Ministry of Earth Science, New Delhi for the all India competitions. The best presentations in each group at the all India level will bag a cash prize of Rs. 25,000, according to a university press release.

R. Palanivel, Dean, Periyar Univeristy, S. Kannan, coordinator, IQAC, K. Murugesan, Professor and Head of the Department of Environmental Sciences, and R. Balagurunathan, Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology, felicitated the winners.

The following is the list of prize winners:

Elocution competition: Group A: 1. R. Sathya (MNS Government HSS), 2. A. Porko (Senthil Public School) and 3. R. Anurindha (Cluny Matriculation School).

Group B: 1.S. Nandhini (Saradha College for Women), 2.M. Gowtham (Gugai HSS), 3. P. Yuvaraj (Gugai HSS).

Essay writing: Group A: 1.A. Bhuvaneshwari (Jothi Vidhyalaya, Elampillai), 2. S. Meena (Mettur Girls HSS) and 3. S. I. Rakshana (Magudanchavadi Model School).

Group B: 1. S. Soundarya (St. Michael’s Matriculation HSS), 2. R. Janavi Priya (GV HSS) and 3. P. Durga (Senthil Public School).

Drawing Competition: Group A: T. Harshitha Shridevi (Senthil Public School), 2. S. Thanushruthi (Cluny Matriculation School) and 3. V. Dhanaprakash (Magudanchavadi Model School).

Group B: 1. T. Kesavan (The Gugai HSS), 2. B. Jeeva (Sri Ramakrishna Saradha High School) and 3. S. Lalithambigai (Sri Saradha Vidhyalaya HSS).
