The two-day Carnatic music competitions for the youngsters in the age group of 15 – 20 years which concluded in the city on Sunday evoked good response.

About 100 boys and girls from the districts of Salem, Erode, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri participated and displayed their talents in the competitions organised by the Salem Sangeetha Vidwath Sabha and co-hosted by the Chennai based KTC Trust.

While about 60 participated in the vocal competition, more than 40 boys and girls displayed their talent in the instruments segment – violin, flute, veena, mridangam, thavil and nagaswaram.

Gayathri Mahesh of popular Apaswaram Raamji’s group acted as the judges along with percussionist ‘Kumbakonam’ Swaminathan and violinist Srinivasamoorthy.

The scheme of the competition was that each participant was expected to be in thorough knowledge of minimum of five keerthanas. While one song was left to the choice of participant, the judges examined them at their choice with regard to other four keerthanas.

The award of first, second and third prize will be handed over to the winners on the opening day of  “Salethil Thiruvaiyaru” music festival scheduled at Dr. C. Vijayaragavachariar hall on Cherry road in the city from May 7 – 12, according to J. Srinivasan, secretary of the Salem Sangeetha Vidwath Sabha.

Mr. Srinivasan said those who had won first prize in the previous years competitions were not allowed to take part in this year’s event. Salem Sangeetha Vidwath Sabha is the reincarnation of Sangeetha Samprokshana Sabha started way back in 1958 by renowned late Salem G. Desikan.
