Goldsmith relieved of jewellery, cash

May 07, 2011 01:07 am | Updated 01:07 am IST - CUDDALORE:

A goldsmith was robbed of a bag containing gold ornaments and gold biscuits weighing 400 gm and Rs.2.5 lakh in cash, while travelling in a town bus from B. Mutlur to Cuddalore on Wednesday night.

In a complaint lodged with the police, N. Murugesan (48) of Keezhperumbakkam in Villupuram district stated that he used to take finished ornaments to jewellery shops in Chidambaram and collect cash and old ornaments.

After completing the day's transactions, he had put the valuables and cash in a bag and boarded an ST bus at Chidambaram. En route, he alighted from the vehicle for refreshments and boarded the town bus.

At B. Mutlur, another person had boarded the bus along with him but chose to travel on the footboard. When the bus was about to stop at Puduchathiram the unidentified person snatched the bag and jumped from the bus. Mr. Murugesan along with conductor Selvam gave chase for some distance, in vain. The unidentified person was picked up by a two-wheeler rider, who was trailing the bus, and both sped towards Chidambaram.
