A seven-year-old girl was killed and four of her family members sustained minor injuries when a portion of a wall of their hut collapsed during early hours on Friday. Priyamani, daughter of Thulasi, a resident of Vadamanapakkam near Cheyyar, died on the spot. Her father, mother and two sisters sustained minor injuries.

District officials said the house was already in a poor state and a light spell of rain caused the wall to collapse.

Green house scheme

Collector K.S. Kandasamy issued an order to grant solatium of ₹4 lakh from the disaster management fund and also to construct a house for the family under the State government’s green house scheme, officials said.

During the 24-hour period ending 8 a.m. on Friday, the district received an average rainfall of 31.32 mm. Vandavasi recorded the highest rainfall of 76 mm. On Friday, Dheeraj Kumar, IAS, district monitoring officer, held a meeting in the district to review the preparedness for northeast monsoon and implementation of government schemes. The collector told reporters that, on an average, rainfall of 1,040 mm is expected for the district every year, of which 644 mm rainfall was recorded so far.

The southwest monsoon brought 325 mm rainfall as against the expected 465 mm rains, while the northeast monsoon has, so far, brought 222 mm rainfall as compared with the expected 446 mm rains, he said.
