A five-year-old girl belonging to Thogamalai in Karur district died on Tuesday.

The deceased M. Mahalakshmi, who was suffering from acute fever, died at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchi where she was admitted on Monday. This is said to be the third death due to acute fever over the last three weeks in Karur district. At least two persons were suspected to have died due to dengue fever.

A senior official of the Health Department said the exact cause of death was yet to be ascertained but conceded that there were a few cases of dengue in the district. Medical teams were working in the affected areas and villages to check the spread of the dengue.

Collector S. Jayandhi visited Thongamalai to inspect the steps being taken by the Health Officials to control the “viral fever”. She asked them to monitor the situation.
