Councillors belonging to opposite parties condemned the Corporation authorities for not removing garbage in wards 45 to 50. They raised the issue at the council meeting held here on Monday.

Chairing the meeting, Mayor E. Bhuvaneswari said that Corporation Commissioner Lakshmi would inspect the areas and efforts would be taken to clear the garbage within two days. Not satisfied with her reply, councillors Alaguraj, Rajeswari and others criticised the “nonchalant attitude” of officials and said non-removal of garbage would lead to outbreak of diseases.

Councillor Shankar said that the corporation had not started preparations for conducting the car festival of Nellaiappar Temple. The Mayor replied that elaborate steps had been taken for the festival and that drinking water and toilet facilities were very much in place.

Even as the Mayor assured to look into the issue, independent councillor Subramanian squatted on the floor and wanted to raise another issue. When the Mayor turned down his request, he went on shouting that the council had not taken any action on the kidnap and murder of an engineer of the Corporation a few months back.

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) councillors thanked Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for allotting funds for the civic body, for inaugurating new buildings in Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and for ordering release of water for irrigation for ‘ kar’ crops.
