February 04, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - Tirupur:

A group of people staged protest at Othakadai near here on Wednesday to express their displeasure over the underground pipeline project planned by Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) through the district.

The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, gave the green signal to take the liquefied natural gas through seven districts in Tamil Nadu as part of the project to take the gas from Kochi to Bengaluru.

Farmland

From the initial stages itself, a section of agrarian community had been of the stance the laying of underground pipelines would affect their profession and hence, the project should not be implemented through the farmlands. They were of the view that the pipelines could be laid alongside the highways.
