Free anti-rabies vaccination camp for hounds

The Veterinary College and Research Institute organised free anti-rabies vaccination camp for hounds at Mullikulam in the district on Sunday.

Rajapalayam and Kanni dog breeds are reared in this part of Tamil Nadu to show the ‘pedigree pride’ and also for hunting. Accordingly, a scheme on ‘Characterization of Rajapalayam and Kanni breed of hounds in Tamil Nadu’ with financial assistance from Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) Research Corpus Fund is being implemented at the Instructional Livestock Farm Complex, Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli.

As part of the scheme and ‘Livestock Week Celebration – 2015’, a free anti-rabies vaccination camp for hounds was organised by VC and RI on Sunday at Mullikulam.

S. Thilagar, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, inaugurated the vaccination camp.

He also enlightened the importance of establishment of Veterinary College and Research Institute, in the region to help the farming community.

Presiding over the event, S. Prathaban, Dean, Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli emphasised the need to conserve native dog breeds of southern Tamil Nadu.

Faculties and students of Veterinary College and Research Institute, vaccinated 245 hounds of Kanni breed against rabies and also treated the sick animals.

R. Selva kumar, Principal Investigator and Assistant Professor, Instructional Livestock Farm Complex, welcomed the gathering and narrated the activities of the scheme.
