A special police team cracked a burglary case in less than 48 hours after burglars struck at the house of a real estate agent and businessman and decamped with 54 sovereigns of gold jewellery, a laptop and Rs. 3.30 lakh in cash.
The burglary took place on the night of October 2. The special team, acting on the orders of Superintendent of Police N.M. Mylvahanan, cracked the case by arresting four persons on Sunday night. The police said that M. Mohamed Rabik (41), the businessman, had gone to Devipattinam with his family members to attend a wedding after locking the house on September 27 and found it broken open when he returned on October 2.
The robbers had gained entry into the house by breaking open the grill gate and a wooden door on the rear side of the house with the help of a crowbar.
Using the keys left in the cupboard, they took away the jewellery and cash and splashed phenol all over the house to destroy evidence.
Acting on a tip-off, a special team comprising S. Sarvesh Raj, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Vivekanandan, Inspector of Police, Bazaar police station, and Ganesalingapandi, Sub-Inspector, Kenikarai police station, arrested four persons.
Interrogation revealed that the four, along with others, had also committed the robbery at a house at Velipattinam here on September 15 and decamped with Rs. 5.10 lakh in cash.
The gang had also snatched a 11-sovereign ‘thali’ chain from one Kathija Beevi at Vani on August 26.
The police recovered the ‘thali’ chain and two two-wheelers used for committing the offence, and are on the lookout for four others who are in possession of the stolen properties.
