Four charred to death as hut catches fire in Villupuram

Police said that prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide.

A woman and her three children were charred to death when the thatched hut in which they were stayingcaught fire, at Kilkondur village near Thirukovilur in Villupuram district. Police identified the victims as Dhanalakshmi, 30, wife of Ilangovan, a worker at the Regulated Marketing Committee in Villupuram and their children Kamaleshwaran, 7, Vishnupriyan, 5, and Rudhran, 1.

According to police, the couple — Dhanalakshmi and Ilangovan — lived in Valuthareddy village near Villupuram. They used to quarrel frequently. Subsequently, Dhanalakshmi moved to her in-laws house in Kilkondur a few days ago.

Police said that prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide. The incident occurred at around 6.30 a.m. when Dhanalakshmi’s in-laws had gone out for farm work. The house was locked from inside.

Around 6.30 a.m., neighbours started hearing screams from inside the house even as thick smoke engulfed the surroundings. By the time they reached out for help, the hut was completely even as the the fire and rescue services personnel reached the spot. The bodies were retrieved and sent for post-mortem to the Government Medical College and Hospital at Mundiyambakkam.

A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
