In the process of identifying flagship schemes for each district in the State, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa is likely to make an announcement at the conference of Collectors and Superintendents of Police on Wednesday.

The Collectors presented their list of demands to the Chief Minister. “There are quite a number of demands from each district,” said a Collector.

According to highly placed sources, the government is in the process of identifying pioneering schemes in each district which will be announced as the flagship programme by the Chief Minister.

At the conference on Tuesday, Ms. Jayalalithaa said there should be growth coupled with distributive justice to ensure sustainable development with the strong bedrock of peace and stability of which the State could justifiably be proud. If this aspect was given due focus in agriculture, industry and services sector - propelled by a sound base in education, health and infrastructure - the State would surely become the cynosure of all in the country, she said in her address of welcome.

Stating that she was personally focussing on the prime issues concerning the economic development of the State, she asked the Collectors to take the responsibility to successfully implement the government schemes on the field to make the State numero uno in the country.

Later, each Collector was granted ten minutes to explain the pace of implementation of development works and government-sponsored schemes. Collectors spoke on subjects ranging from solid waste management, work under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, patta transfer, free milch animals scheme, agriculture and public distribution system.

The topics for each district were drafted from the dossier submitted by the Collectors and the presentations were backed by statistics. Only when there were inconsistencies in the statistics or in the presentation, the Chief Minister and respective secretaries sought clarification, sources said.
