Fishing ban from June 15

June 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - NAGERCOIL:

The 45-day annual ban on deep sea fishing in villages on the west coast of Kanyakumari district will come into force from June 15. Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan has stated in a press release that mechanised boats and trawlers should not engage in deep sea fishing from June 15 to July 29. Those who had ventured into the sea already should return to the shore by June 15. Since the ban was meant to promote fish breeding, violation of the ban order would invite stringent action. Fishermen could utilise the ban period to undertake maintenance, repair and paint works of their boats. About 24,000 fishermen in the 38 villages on the west coast would receive compensation for the ban period, the release added.
