Fishermen resort to indefinite strike

October 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - PUDUKOTTAI:

Fishermen of Jagadapattinam and Kottaipattinam resorted to indefinite strike from Friday in support of their two-point charter of demands.

They demanded the immediate release of 28 fishermen who had been arrested by the Sri Lankan naval personnel in the last few months and also return of 30 mechanised boats seized by them.

N. Kuttiyandi, president of the Jagadapattinam Fishermen Welfare Association and Abdul Hameed of the Kottaipattinam association, said that the livelihood of the fishermen was at stake following the continued threat from the Sri Lankan naval personnel.

They sought immediate action by the state and central government for the release of the fishermen and their property.
