Fishermen object to seaport


Fishermen have objected to a proposal to build a seaport situated between Kovalam in Kerala and Keelamanakudi in Kanniyakumari district of Tamil Nadu over fears it would cause irreparable damage to the environment. In a petition to the Environment Directorate, representatives of various fishermen’s organisations said naturally-formed sand dunes, mangroves and salt pans would be lost if the port were to come up at the ecologically-sensitive spot.
