Letter

In a letter to Mahesan Kasirajan, Director of Sugar, association general secretary, N.K. Natarasan has said that the mill started the matriculation higher secondary school in 1978 and the polytechnic college in 1984-85.

The polytechnic college is the first self-financing institution started by a sugar mill in the State.

These institutions functioned from a temporary building on the factory premises and later a new building was constructed.

The school was started for the benefit of children of factory workers, staff and sugarcane growers.

He alleged that the Managing Director of the sugar mill was keen on closing the school and polytechnic college and was in the process of passing a resolution to this effect at a meeting to be held on May 16.

The advertisements for admission to first year courses for the polytechnic college have also been stopped. Hence, the association urged the State government to undertake the school and polytechnic college or convert these institutions into government-aided institutions.
