Farmers’ federation frowns at move to immerse Ganesh idols in LBP canal

The Federation of Tamil Nadu Agriculturists Associations has expressed displeasure over the proposed move to allow immersion of Ganesh idols in Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) canal stretch passing through Kangayam area during Vinayaka Chathruthi celebrations.

C. Nallasami, secretary of the Federation, said farmers fear that the immersion of the idol could affect the productivity of the standing crops like sugarcane, tapioca and coconut, as many of the idols were not made of eco-friendly material.Chemical paints were also used despite the instructions against their use.

“Water mixed with chemicals will affect the growth of the crops significantly. So, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) and other authorities should not give the green signal to immerse the idols,” he added.

Mr. Nallasami wondered why authorities do not prefer the immersion of idols in River Noyyal which flowed nearby.

"Anyway, water in Noyyal is already polluted by industrial effluents. So why pollute LBP canal too. Only last year, the authorities started using LBP canal amid stiff opposition from farmers", he pointed out.

When contacted, TNPCB District Environmental Engineer K. Elankumaran told The Hindu that the Board had been closely monitoring the production of idols in the last few years and had ensured that only environmental friendly materials were used.

“There is no need for any fear of pollution. If anyone comes to know of illegal means of production, they can inform us and action will be taken against the idol makers,” he said.
