A fake website of the State-run Thiruvalluvar University in Vellore has been misleading unsuspecting students despite the university authorities filing a police complaint nearly four months ago.

A Google search for the 13-year-old Thiruvalluvar University brings up two websitesthiruvalluvaruniversity.ac.inandwww.tvuni.in.

The latter website, the fake one, introduces the university as Thiruvalluvar Vidhyalaya.

The fraudulent website was detected by the Coimbatore-based AES Technologies India Pvt Ltd, which had maintained the original website for the past five years.

Former Vice Chancellor P. Gunasekaran took up the issue with UGC.

A disclaimer was provided as a pop-up on the original website asking students to keep away from fake ones.

“Immediately, the fake website put out a disclaimer saying that it was the official site. They are posting updates and events that we load onto the university website,” he said.

Professor Gunasekaran said they had lodged a complaint with the district police and cyber crime.

Registrar A. Amuldoss said a complaint will be lodged with the Director-General of Police.

The fake site has listed numerous courses, while the university is offering just seven postgraduate courses.

AES Technologies India Pvt Ltd, which had developed and maintained Thiruvalluvar university’s original website, traced the server to a
