Surveillance cameras installed at various points in the city has helped in creating a crime-deterrence effect, according to personnel manning the modern control room.
It is now over a fortnight since the control room was established with four television sets, GPS tracking equipment, and other gadgets for centralised monitoring of main thoroughfares.
There is now a general consciousness among people that their movements across the city is well within the ambit of as many as 68 surveillance cameras.
Suspicious movements of people could be easily identified, police sources said.
So far, there has been no instance of any criminal getting caught due to suspicious movement, but the deterrence effect is well reflected in adherence of motorists to traffic norms.
The live visuals with zoom-in features are being monitored round-the-clock from the control room set up on the premises of the District Police Office.
It was possible to track the number of vehicles stopping at the signal points or those negotiating such points slowly.
Cameras fixed in the Corporation Bus Stand have also been linked to the control room, the sources said.
The police have asked the railways to fix cameras at 48 spots at the Erode Junction.
Technology integration into improving policing has reflected in the installation of closed circuit televisions in a number of police stations.
