‘Explain action taken against illegal flag poles’

December 04, 2018 12:51 am | Updated 12:51 am IST - CHENNAI

The Madras High Court on Monday decided against issuing a direction to the State government to take action against unauthorised flag poles erected by political parties on road margins and other public places. Instead, it referred to various legal provisions which require grant of prior permission for such poles and asked the officials to explain action taken against unauthorised poles.

A Division Bench of Justices M. Sathyanarayanan and P. Rajamanickam issued the direction while hearing a public interest litigation petition seeking a ban on erection of flag poles in public places across the State. The judges directed the Municipal Administration Secretary, Greater Chennai Corporation and Director General of Police to submit their replies by January 9.
