Exhibition, food festival held for products made by SHGs

Part of 15-day campaign under ‘Shehri Samridhi Utsav’

An exhibition of products manufactured by Self Help Groups (SHG) along with a food festival was organised in the district on Tuesday. The products displayed included ornamental jewels made by narikurava community in and around urban parts of Tiruvannamalai.

Collector K.S. Kandasamy inaugurated the event, which is being organised by the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women, Tiruvannamalai. Officials said this was part of a 15-day campaign under the “Shehri Samridhi Utsav” scheme of the National Urban Livelihood Mission.

Jute bags, paper bags, stone carvings and sarees were displayed at the exhibition. There were seven SHGs exclusively for narikurava community in Chengam and Pudupalayam town panchayats.

They displayed ornamental jewels at the exhibition, an official said.

Permanent stalls

As per the suggestion of the Collector, stalls for selling traditional food prepared by SHGs would be set up along the girivalam path and other public places such as parks, the official said and added that there were five such permanent stalls as of now. As part of the campaign, an awareness rally was held on February 1 followed by a loan mela on February 4. A job mela for youth would be conducted on February 14.

M. Prathap, Assistant Collector (training), Chandra, project director, Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women, Tiruvannamalai and S. Parijatham, commissioner of Tiruvannamalai Municipality were present.
