‘If you have diabetes, how can footwear save your feet?’ was the topic for the painting competition.

A total of 200 schoolchildren took part in competitions organised by the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism of Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, on Saturday.

They were held at Darling Residency as part of the World Diabetes Day.

Students painted to answer, ‘If you have diabetes, how can footwear save your feet?’ and the topic for an essay competition was ‘Diabetes and Obesity in young – how can parents and teachers help them overcome this situation?’ A quiz on science and general health was organised for teachers. Teachers from 10 schools took part.

According to Nihal Thomas, Associate Director, CMC, “Competitive activities such as painting and essay-writing on themes of diabetes would improve the knowledge about the disease and encourage adoption of a health lifestyle.”

In keeping with the objective of World Diabetes Day, these competitions are a way of inculcating health preventive measures not just for school children, but also their families and in turn, the entire community, he said.

Physician, PMR, Chittoor campus and former director of CMCH, Vellore, presided over the inaugural session.

Sudha Jasmine, assistant professor, Child Health Unit-I, CMC-Vellore, research officer, Endocrinology, CMC-Vellore, Teena Chandran and Arockiaseeli Mabel from College of Nursing, CMC-Vellore were the judges for the painting competition.
