E. Thirumahan Everaa, Erode (East) MLA and son of former Union Minister E.V.K.S. Elangovan, died of cardiac arrest in Erode on Wednesday. He was 46.

Mr. Everaa, the great grandson of Dravidar Kazhagam founder Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, had contested as a Congress candidate and was elected to the Assembly in 2021.

Party sources said he developed breathing difficulty and was taken to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

His body was taken to his house on Cutchery Street, where a large number of party cadre and members of the public gathered to pay homage. Mr. Elangovan arrived in the evening. Erode Collector H. Krishnanunni, SP V. Sasimohan, Mayor S. Nagarathinam, MP A. Ganeshamurthi, AIADMK MLA K.A. Sengottaiyan, former Ministers and members of various parties paid tributes to Mr. Everaa.

Condolences pour in

Governor R.N. Ravi said his untimely death was an “irrevocable loss to his family and friends”.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said Mr. Everaa gained the affection of everyone in the Assembly with his calm demeanour and sense of responsibility. He also visited Erode and laid a wreath on the casket containing the mortal remains of the MLA, and offered his condolences to Mr. Elangovan.

Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami said he was deeply saddened by the MLA’s death.

The Congress hailed him as “a progressive leader who followed in the footsteps of his father E.V.K.S. Elangovan and great grandfather Periyar”.

TNCC president K.S. Alagiri said the MLA’s death at a young age of 46 was a great loss to the party. A press release said Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, party leader Rahul Gandhi and AICC general secretaries K.C. Venugopal and Mukul Wasnik offered their condolences to Mr. Elangovan.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, MDMK leader Vaiko, DMK leader Kanimozhi, PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss, Tamil Maanila Congress president G.K. Vasan, MMK leader Jawahirullah, AMMK leader T.T.V. Dhinakaran and MNM founder Kamal Haasan also offered their condolences.
