The Corporation is banking on Animal Birth Control (ABC) initiative, the only available option, to contain and reduce population of community dogs in the city limits.

Under a project of the Animal Welfare Board of India, non-government organisations IPAN (Indian Project for Animals and Nature) and People for Animals (Coimbatore Chapter 2) have teamed up with the Corporation to sterilise the dogs that are captured without causing harm.

Street dogs

Presence of street dogs in packs at certain places, particularly in the vicinity of marriage halls, indicates that the civic authorities will have to sustain the ABC drive vigorously, residents say. The Health wing of the Corporation has been sterilising the dogs at the Animal Birth Control Centre at Solar and leaving them back again at the spots from where they were captured after administering anti-rabies vaccine. Community dogs are being sterilised and vaccinated at the rate of 1,000 every year. The joint initiative was progressing steadily, Corporation Commissioner R. Mohan said.
