Chief Minister Jayalalithaa declared open new buildings to house the Government Engineering College at Sengipatti in Thanjavur district through video conferencing from Chennai on Friday.
Spread over 16,773.24 square metres, the new buildings have been built at a cost of Rs. 49.38 crore.
The college was functioning for sometime at a temporary accommodation in Thanjavur while the hostel was functioning near that facility. After sanction for the construction of new buildings was accorded, the grand edifice rose at Sengipatti village and the campus houses administrative block, 22 classrooms, 32 laboratories, girls and boys' hostels, conference hall, workshop, gymnasium, library, and the principal’s quarters.
While the boys hostel has 110 rooms to accommodate 357 inmates, the girls hostel has 76 rooms to accommodate 228 students. After the inaugural, District Collector N. Subbaiyan, Principal Lakshmana Perumal and elected people’s representatives distributed sweets among the public and students to mark the occasion.
