Officials removing the encroachments on water bodies at Omalur block in Salem district.

The revenue officials continued to remove encroachments from water bodies near Omalur for the second consecutive day on Tuesday.

The tanks near Omalur received water from the Shevaroy hills. Encroachments in the channels leading to the tanks affected had the flow of water to the water bodies, leading to drought conditions during summer.

The local people brought this to the notice of S. Anees Sekhar, Sub-Collector during the jamabandhi held at the Omalur taluk office recently.

Following this, a team of revenue officials, led by S. Narmada, tahsildar, Omalur, launched the work of removing the encroachment in the channels feeding water to Panankadu tank, Samuthira tank, Meersamuthira tank, all near Karuppur, on Monday.

The officials removed the constructions which blocked the flow of water into the channels, with police protection.

The local people have asked the district administration to ban the dumping of wastes and effluents into the water bodies.

They alleged that dumping wastes and effluents polluted the water of the tanks, posing health hazard to the people living in the surrounding areas. They asked the officials to find a solution to this problem too.
