Encroachments on Elampillai Lake removed

Encroachments being removed from Elampillai Lake in Salem on Monday.

The revenue officials on Monday removed encroachments on the Elampillai Lake.

The lake at Santhaipettai is spread over 28 acres. A large number of people had encroached upon the water spread area and had constructed houses, and shops.

The release of drainage water, dumping of garbage, presence of water hyacinth and korai vegetation had further shrunk the water spread area of the lake.

This posed a health hazard to local people. The poor condition of the lake was brought to the notice of the revenue authorities by the nearby residents.

Elampillai Town Panchayat took steps to remove the encroachments to ensure free flow of water in to the lake.

The officials had served notices on encroachers twice to vacate the site.

Some of the people who had constructed houses on the encroached land approached court stating that they belonged to the weaker section and pleaded for title deed for the land.

The District Collector last month directed the town panchayat authorities to take steps for evicting the rest of 60 families residing on the encroached land.

When the Town Panchayat officials attempted to evict them last month, they had asked for more time to vacate the place. As the deadline ends on Sunday, the revenue and town panchayat officials removed the encroachments.

The employees of the Tangedco too assisted them in the eviction operation.

A police team led by J. Jareena Begum, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sankagiri, was present at the venue to maintain law and order.
