Political parties had expressed reserveration over the conduct of bypoll in view of the Gaja cyclone relief measure in the district.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has decided not to hold by-election to the Tiruvarur Assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu on January 28 as scheduled.

The by-election notification now stood rescinded, Chief Electoral Officer of the State Satyabrata Sahoo said.

As a consequence of the cancellation of the notification, actions and steps taken by the Returning Officer for the constituency were "declared null and void," according to a communication sent by the ECI to Mr Sahoo on Sunday.

Ever since the Commission announced a week ago that it would hold the by-election, sections of political parties had expressed reservations that the bypoll would come in the way of implementation of relief measures in areas hit by the Gaja cyclone.

Communist Party of India's national secretary and MP D.Raja gave a petition to the Commission, seeking cancellation of the notification.

After the Commission's directive, Tiruvarur Collector and District Election Officer L. Nimal Raj held a meeting on Saturday with political parties, which had all demanded that the by-election be deferred.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam had announced their nominees for the bypoll.

By-election to the Tiruvarur Assembly constituency was necessitated after the seat fell vacant following the death of DMK patriarch and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, who represented it in the Assembly.
