October 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:01 am IST - KANCHEEPURAM:

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has assured residents that the environment around the proposed Perarignar Anna Handloom Silk Park (PAHSP) at Kizhkathirpur will remain protected with the setting up of a zero-liquid discharge Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP).

Giving this assurance at the public hearing held at the PAHSP site on Friday, TNPCB officials said that the proposed zero-liquid discharge ETP would have the capacity to treat around 3,700 kilolitres of effluent generated from the dyeing units to be set up in the 75-acre PAHSP.

Safe disposal

While the treated water would be recycled, the sludge, estimated to be around 4,300 tonnes per year generated from the ETP would be transported to the Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility (TSDF) maintained by the TNPCB in the neighbouring district for safe disposal.

They also said that the PAHSP management would be made to retain 35 per cent of the total 75 acres as green cover.
