Frequent incidents involving Nigerians in cases of criminal activities, sale of liquor from apartments and fake apparel products and illegal stay in the Tirupur knitwear cluster are causing concern among the locals.

A section of residents of Rayapuram, where Nigerians reside, came together recently and urged the police to vacate the entire Nigerians from the area.

“As long as Nigerians do not have the resident permit, they should be asked to stay in hotels like our textile traders do when they go abroad on business visits,” R. Saminathan, a social activist and resident of Rayapuram, told The Hindu .

Eight Nigerians were arrested in a week for allegedly misbehaving with a local girl and creating nuisance in residential areas.

Besides, many Nigerians were arrested in recent times for illegal stay and for running unauthorised bars from residential apartments.

The residents have called upon the owners of the houses where the Nigerians stay to ask them to vacate within 10 days.

Assistant Commissioner of Police S. Jeyachandran said that as long as any foreigner came to the city with a valid visa, they could not be asked to leave.
