The city police have commenced drive against illegal parking of vehicles on Junction main road and Suramangalam main road.
Both these thoroughfares lead to Salem Railway Junction and the indiscriminate parking has been hampering the free flow of traffic. Traffic snarls are frequently witnessed on the Tiruvakavundanur roundtana to Railway Junction stretch.The police have now banned the parking of vehicles on Suramangalam main road mainly near the Uzhavar Santhai.
Two-wheeler riders who come to Uzhavar Sandhai have been directed to park the vehicles on the adjacent Ranga Nagar main road.
Police have displayed posters warning people against parking of vehicles on the road sides.
Besides, they have also distributed pamphlets to all the shops for displaying the same prominently in their shops. The shop owners have also been directed not to allow indiscriminate parking of two-wheelers in front of the shops.
A cross section of the farmers and consumers visiting Uzhavar Sandhai, while welcoming the move, has pleaded with the Corporation for the creation of a permanent parking lot on this road.
There is adequate vacant space in the Salem West MLA office campus on Ranga Nagar road. This could be utilised for creating a parking lot.
Similarly, the Corporation should post personnel for regulating the parking of two-wheelers on the Suramangalam main road towards the Tiruvakavundanur roundtana.
They can post ex-servicemen for manning and collecting the parking fee. Besides, augmenting the revenue of the Corporation, this would also provide job opportunities to a few unemployed, says S. Kadiravan of Old Suramangalam, a consumer activist.
