Dravidar Kazhagam president K. Veeramani on Sunday called for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test to be abolished.

In a statement, he said, “Crusaders of social justice should take a vow on the first death anniversary of S. Anitha [a Dalit medical aspirant who challenged NEET in the Supreme Court] that they would work towards getting NEET abolished.”

The cause of social justice had overcome many hurdles over the years, he said, questioning the rationale behind conducting NEET when there was no common syllabus across the country.

Mr. Veeramani said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while serving as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, vociferously opposed a common entrance exam, but was now keen on implementing it which, he said, went against the principle of social justice.

“What mistake had the students made when the question paper itself had many errors?” he asked, adding, “When the Supreme Court itself has refused to grant grace marks, won’t the citizens lose confidence in the system?”
