DMK’s demand to Railway Board

January 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:02 am IST - TIRUNELVELI:

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has appealed to the Railway Board to make hefty one-time fund allocation for laying a second railway track between Chennai and Kanyakumari and complete the work in this section in a time-bound manner.

A resolution to this effect was passed at the first meeting of Tirunelveli Central district party unit held here on Sunday after the recently conducted party organisational polls with party’s presidium chairman Suba. Seetharaman in chair.

Explaining the resolutions passed at the meeting, secretary of central party district Abdul Wahab said the number of rail passengers travelling in this section was one of the highest in the Southern Railway. However, lack of double-track between Kanyakumari and Chennai prevented operation of additional trains.

Considering the revenue the railways could generate from this section, the Railway Board should ensure hefty fund allocation in the Railway Budget 2015 for this long-pending project.

Construction of a rail overbridge at Kulavanigarpuram manned level crossing should be started immediately to give the much-needed relief to road-users.

The proposed ring road project for Tirunelveli city, Sethusamudram Channel project and work on repairing damaged roads across Tirunelveli city should be taken up without delay, Mr. Wahab said. The meeting condemned the decision to shift the Sub Registrar Office at Melapalayam.
