DMK urges Governor to order CBI probe against CM

The DMK on Monday stepped up its campaign against Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami by meeting Governor Banwarilal Purohit and seeking a CBI probe into what it had called “mega scams” and “illegal” contracts awarded to the friends and family members of the Chief Minister.

In a memorandum presented to the Governor at the Raj Bhavan, DMK working president M.K. Stalin alleged that government contracts to the tune of ₹3,120 crore were illegally awarded to companies that had close links with Mr. Palaniswami.

Recalling the Income Tax Department’s recent searches on the premises of SPK group of companies — a leading contractor that takes up government contracts — Mr. Stalin said Nagarajan Seyyadurai, the managing director of these companies, was a partner in Ventakachalapathy and Co, a firm run by P. Subramaniam, the father-in-law of the Chief Minister’s son Mithun.

Mr. Stalin said the searches yielded ₹180 crore and 105 kg gold and the companies that came under the I-T scanner were SPK Spinners Private Ltd, SPK Hotels, SPK and Co Expressway Pvt Ltd, and Sri Balaji Tollways Pvt Ltd.

He said the Chief Minister also held the portfolio of Highways and Minor Ports, and contracts pertaining to road works to the tune of ₹3,120 crore were awarded to Venkatachalapthy and Co., and SPK and Co., which were controlled by Mr. Nagarajan Seyyadurai, Mr. Subramaniam and sand mining baron Sekar Reddy.

Mr. Palaniswami, the DMK leader alleged, had obtained pecuniary advantage by misusing his office. “He (Mr. Palaniswami), as a public servant, has committed all the offences under the relevant sub-sections of Section 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and hence, is punishable for those offences,” Mr. Stalin said in the memorandum.

He alleged that the Ministers were indulging in corruption while implementing various Centrally sponsored schemes and programmes.

Mr. Stalin said the DMK had already filed a complaint with the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption in this regard on June 13. He urged the Governor to initiate appropriate action for a probe by the CBI into the “mega scams”.
