The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) will not contest in the by-election to the R.K. Nagar constituency slated for June 27, party leader M. Karunanidhi said on Wednesday.
“One can easily understand the manner with which the by-election will be conducted in the government of those who have enormous influence over judiciary and the Election Commission,” Mr. Karunanidhi said explaining the reason behind his party’s decision to stay away from the election.
Noting that when Srirangam Assembly constituency fell vacant on September 27, 2014, in the wake of disqualification of Ms Jayalalithaa, the Election Commission announced election only on January 12, 2015, “But election for R.K. Nagar constituency was announced in ten days after the sitting MLA resigned,” he said.
Mr. Karunanidhi said “the DMK had witnessed how money played a role in the Srirangam by-election and the police remained indifferent to the excess of the ruling partymen.”
“We know how democracy will be treated in the by-election. When the elections to the state Assembly are one year away, the DMK has decided not to contest in the by-election,” he said.
