DMK not close to Chidambaram: Karunanidhi

March 25, 2014 11:09 am | Updated November 16, 2021 06:25 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Seeking to distance his party from Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Sunday took exception to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s campaign remarks that the DMK should be defeated in the Lok Sabha polls as it stood by Mr. Chidambaram.

In a statement here, he wondered whether his daughter having been jailed in the Tihar prison for a crime she had not committed was because his party’s proximity to Mr. Chidambaram.

“A case has been filed for obtaining loan in the form of a cheque for the satellite channel. Is it because the DMK supported Mr. Chidambaram? Even before ascertaining the veracity of the case, the Income Tax Department issued order demanding Rs. 90 crore as fine,” he said.

Mr. Karunanidhi also wanted to know whether his wife, who was not keeping well, was subjected to an inquiry, because the DMK supported Mr. Chidambaram.

“All these incidents took place when the DMK was part of the Congress-led UPA at the Centre. But the DMK did not quit the UPA for these reasons. It decided to leave it because of the UPA’s indifferent attitude towards the Sri Lankan Tamils issue,” he said.
