DMK members protest

January 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - VILLUPURAM:

The supporters of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and members of its farmers’ wing, led by former Minister K. Ponmudy, staged an agitation in front of the private sugar factory at Mundiyambakkam, seeking immediate settlement of arrears to sugarcane suppliers on Thursday.

They said that there were four private sugar factories in Villupuram district that had built up arrears to the tune of Rs. 92 crore. The non-clearance of the dues had put the farmers to great hardships.

They also urged the State government and the Centre to fix the sugarcane procurement price at Rs. 3,500 per tonne in keeping with the rising costs of cultivation. — Special Correspondent
