BJP State president Tamilisai Soundararajan on Friday said the DMK was assuming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had referred to it when he said that the national party’s doors were open to “old friends” for forging an alliance for the Lok Sabha polls.
“Why is the DMK assuming that the BJP is keen on forming an alliance with it for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls?” she asked.
“Why does [DMK leader] Stalin think that the BJP is calling them (DMK)? The Prime Minister said very clearly that [late Prime Minister] Vajpayee had shown the way alliances must be formed. Mr. Modi also said that party cadre don’t have to worry about alliances right now,” she said.
When Mr. Modi spoke about “friends”, the DMK cannot deny that it once shared power with the BJP at the Centre. Mr. Modi is respected and is as good a leader as Vajpayee, the BJP leader said.
Congress ally
“Why is the DMK nervous that we may be calling them? We know who we are going to form alliances with,” she said.
Noting that the DMK was currently a Congress ally, she said, “They are going with [Congress president] Rahul Gandhi. Stalin himself proposed Rahul Gandhi’s name for the PM’s post.”
