CPI and CPI(M) say the fund transfer is not unusual

The DMK had donated ₹15 crore each to its allies, the CPI and Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi, and ₹10 crore to the CPI(M) during the last Parliamentary elections.

This came to light in an election expenditure affidavit filed by the DMK before the Election Commission.

The two Communist parties on Monday said there was nothing unusual in receiving donations from the DMK for election expenditure.

According to the affidavit filed on August 27, the DMK showed an expenditure of ₹79.26 crore, of which ₹40 crore was given to the three parties.

“We collected money throughout the State and spent the amount for election. We have submitted the expenditure to the Election Commission. We have not suppressed anything. Everything is done in an transparent manner,” CPI(M) State secretary K. Balakrishnan told The Hindu.

CPI State secretary R. Mutharasan said election funding was usual and there was nothing wrong in it. “What we have received is not scam money. Alliance parties help one another during the election,” he said.

The CPI and the CPI(M) were allotted two seats in the Lok Sabha polls and the KMDK, which contested on the DMK’s “rising sun” symbol, one seat. Candidates of the three parties emerged victorious from all seats.

When pointed out that the affidavit filed by the CPI(M) before the Election Commission had not made any reference to the amount given by the DMK, Mr. Balakrishnan said the State unit had sent all details to the central committee of the party and it might be reflected in the next affidavit.

In its affidavit, the CPI(M) had said the expenditure across the country was around ₹7.2 crore. “I think affidavits will be filed stage by stage. Every transaction is done through bank and nothing is suppressed,” Mr. Balakrishnan said.

‘Routine and usual’

DMK spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan described as “routine and usual” the fund given by his party to its alliance partners.

Asked whether it was a practice to donate money to alliance partners, he said this time the DMK had donated funds for election expenditure.

The DMK had spent ₹58,93,994 for M.K. Stalin, its president and “star campaigner”. The amount was mostly for air travel during campaign.

The expenses for propaganda through media was ₹15,46,14,693.

The party claimed that it had spent ₹50 lakh each on its Lok Sabha candidates and ₹25 lakh each on candidates who contested in the Assembly byelections.
