Disqualification move ‘internal party squabbling’, says Kamal

Optimistic about MNM’s prospects in just-concluded polls

Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan said on Friday that the Tamil Nadu State Assembly Speaker Dhanapal’s decision to send show-cause notices to three sitting AIADMK MLAs, initiating their disqualification, was merely ‘internal party squabbling’.

Mr. Haasan spoke to mediapersons at the Chennai airport before leaving for Ottapidaram Assembly constituency to campaign for Valarum Tamilagam party candidate M. Gandhi.

However, when asked if his party welcomed DMK president M.K. Stalin’s no-confidence motion against the Speaker, Mr. Haasan gave a sarcastic response, “They will do whatever they want.”

He also remained upbeat about the Makkal Needhi Maiam’s performance in the Lok Sabha elections and the bypolls to the 22 State Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu and said that he had received feedback that the party would do well.

Continues rally

Later on, Mr. Haasan, took part in a campaign rally seeking votes for Valarum Tamilagam party candidate, M. Gandhi.

Urging voters not to fall for ‘bribes’ in exchange for their votes from political parties, Mr. Haasan said, “We are here to tell you what we can do and what we will do. The underlying principle of our party is ‘honesty’ and love for people. Other political parties are not concerned about it. If they were, they wouldn’t give money to voters in advance. It is not their money.”

There was no need to commit major ‘sacrifices,’ he said. “You just have to vote for the right party,” he added.

Mr. Haasan will continue to campaign for his party and its allies in the byelections for Sulur, Ottapidaram, Thiruparakundram and Aravakurichi assembly constituencies.
