Fund sanctioned to deepen lake, strengthen bunds

With the Periyakulam Lake at Vellode Birds Sanctuary turning to be a major tourist attraction in the district, development works to the tune of ₹ 2.35 crore are being carried out.

The sanctuary is located at Vadamugam Vellode, 12 km from Erode on 73.93 hectare. Thousands of birds, both domestic and foreign species, visit the sanctuary every year from November to March. However, due to poor water storage in the past three years, only a few birds visit the sanctuary. The Forest Department that maintains the sanctuary submitted a proposal to the State government to carry out development works to the tune of ₹ 4.90 crore.

In phase I, the government sanctioned ₹ 2.35 crore for deepening the lake and strengthening the bunds to improve storage capacity.

Seepage water from the Lower Bhavani Project canal and rainwater were the major source of water for the lake. Hence, deepening would lead to more storage, officials said.

In phase II, other works, including installing solar lamps, beautifying the entrance, boating facility, and creating bunds for the birds, would be carried out, they added.
