Denial of pension: elderly stage sit-in

A group of elderly, whose names have been taken out of the pensioners’ rolls, staged a sit-in inside the office of the tashildar for social welfare scheme here on Tuesday.

Led by the former councillor of the Chidambaram municipality Siva Kannadasan, a supporter of the DMK, they brought a mat and a pillow to convey the message that they would staytill they get a favourable response.

The BJP expressed its solidarity with the pensioners, according to V. Rajarathinam, Cuddalore district treasurer of the party. Mr. Kannadasan told The Hindu that eight months ago the officials arbitrarily deleted the names of 2,000 pensioners in Chidambaram region without any valid reason or advance intimation.

He stated that these people were dependent on the pension amount for their sustenance. The denial had put them to hardships. Though he had sent in several petitions to the tahildar (social welfare) and the Cuddalore District Collector to resume the pension payment they did not respond.

Therefore, when he announced that he would observe an indefinite fast in front of the Anna statue here from October 1, 2014 the then tahsildar dissuaded him by giving an assurance that the pension issue would be resolved within a month.

But till today nothing tangible had been done. However, on the promise of the tahsildar incharge, Anandaraman, today that speedy solution would be found to the issue the elderly persons gave up their agitation.

Verification process

Mr Kannadasan said that the government should also initiate the verification process in the case of 4,000 people who had given petitions seeking pension under the Amma Thittam.
