The Powerloom Workers Federation held a demonstration in front of the taluk office here on Tuesday demanding that the wage agreement arrived at early this year be implemented in total. The workers are engaged in the manufacture of towels. Powerloom workers are spread across Paapaarapatty, Annasagaram, Laligam, providing direct and indirect employment to over 10,000 families here.

They make 30 different types of towels using powerlooms set up in their houses. They were being paid wages based on the measurement of towels and veshti, which according to them was not remunerative. Talks were held in February after a 11-day strike by the workers. A wage raise of Rs. 250 a meter was agreed upon.

But it was not implemented, the workers said. State secretary of the federation, V.P. Swaminathan, asked the district administration to intervene in the matter.
