With the increase in number of heavy vehicles on the Namakkal – Tiruchengode Main Road, there is a growing demand for widening the 27 km stretch for smooth movement of vehicles.
Presence of educational institutions along the stretch and frequent movement of heavy vehicles to Erode keeps the entire stretch busy throughout the day.
Also, those villagers residing near the roads frequently transport their agriculture produce to markets in Namakkal, Tiruchengode and to Erode.
During morning and evening hours considering the movement of a large number of educational institution buses, the Chief Minister had in July 2014 announced that the existing two-lane would be widened into a four-lane road at a cost of Rs. 140 crore. But even after a year, work is yet to begin causing hardship to the road users.
Villagers wanted the project to be immediately taken up and completed at the earliest as flow of vehicles is on the rise everyday.
Likewise, there is a growing demand for widening the 20 km stretch from Tiruchengode to Erode for which no projects were announced till now.
Since the road passes through many villages, frequent accidents takes place in the stretch as people have been long-demanding for widening the stretch.
Recently, the Tiruchengode Bus Owners Association has demanded for widening the stretch to reduce accidents and also to reduce travel time.
They said that movement of educational institution buses, two-wheelers and four-wheelers is very high in the stretch when compared to 2010.
They wanted the 20 km stretch to be converted as four-lane so that the road users’ travel time is saved besides travellers feel comfortable.
They also demanded a bypass road for Tiruchengode as the town is getting congested throughout the day.
