The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) will take a call on the installation of smart meters all over the State once it studies the impact of such meters in T. Nagar.
The locality has 1.44 lakh consumers, who will receive smart meters in place of the existing meters.
The smart meters will enable the power utility to assess electricity consumption more accurately and get data on consumption patterns without the role of assessors.
Data transmission will be online and will happen automatically.
The question of the new meters making a difference to the utility in terms of cost is being examined.
The smart meters will make sense in States where billing and collection efficiency is not high. But, in Tamil Nadu, the officials claim, it is virtually 100%. “So, we are not excited about these meters per se. What would be of interest to us is whether these meters will help reduce the cost of billing,” says a senior official.
