Clarifying that no reference had been made to the Union Home Ministry in connection with the release of the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Saturday said a decision would be taken in a just and fair manner and in accordance with the Constitution.
“A section of the media has been reporting that a reference has been made to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Some television channels have been conducting debates on this assumption. It is clarified that no reference has been made to the Ministry of Home Affairs...,” a release said.
The Tamil Nadu Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, on September 9, recommended to Governor Banwarilal Purohit that all seven life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination could be released under Article 161 of the Constitution.
The Governor’s office said the case was a complex one and involved the examination of legal, administrative and constitutional issues, while pointing out that voluminous records with connected judgments were received from the State government only on September 14.
“All efforts will be taken to process the papers scrupulously. Necessary consultation may be carried out, when required in due course. The decision will be taken in a just and fair manner and in accordance with the Constitution,” the Raj Bhavan explained.
